Tourism officials in South Korea have announced that the number of Indonesian tourists visiting the country has jumped nearly 15 percent in the first half of the year. Given the increase, the balance of incoming and outgoing travelers and crew is now less lopsided, with about 140,000 coming in and 175,000 going out. The surge is attributed to South Korea having taken several steps to make Korea more Muslim-friendly. Korea has also been joining forces with Indonesian firms to create video content that introduces major tourist destinations.

A police captain in Vietnam has received a one-year ban from flying after allegedly causing a fracas at a Saigon airport. In addition to using abusive language, the officer is said to have also shoved several people as she was being escorted away from the scene. For her part, the captain in question admits to being unable to restrain herself, but claims that she had been verbally assaulted first. According to officials, seeing passengers causing a commotion at Vietnamese airports is not a rare sight.

According to two popular currency exchange services in Thailand, anti-Chinese government slogans emblazoned on Hong Kong banknotes will render the notes unexchangeable. In making the announcement, the services also furnished examples of banknotes that had been defaced.  The messages have been reported to say, “Hong Kong independence,” “Oppose [the] Communist Party and save the country,” and “Return the sovereign power to the people.”

A journalist in Indonesia has filed an urgent appeal to the UN's Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression amid claims of intimidation and harassment. The claims stem from the journalist's reporting on the internet blackout sanctioned by the government amid escalating protests in the country's western-most provinces. If the appeal is deemed credible, the rapporteur will send a letter to Indonesia's foreign minister urging the government to ensure the “physical and mental integrity” of the journalist in question.

Students in the Philippines may no longer have to burn the midnight oil to do their homework if proposed changes to the law there are enacted. Philippine lawmakers are concerned that homework may deprive both students and parents of time for rest, relaxation, and interaction at home. The proposed change would also require students to leave textbooks at schools, rather than lugging them around. Proposed fines for breaking the new law include a one-point-one million won fine or up to two years in prison.

China is suffering a severe pork calamity. Prices of the popular meat have skyrocketed there as of late, due in no small part to the devastating effects of African Swine Fever, which has ravaged the country's pork industry. In a country where the word pork is considered synonymous with meat, even a small disruption to pork production can have dire consequences. In fact, the situation has become so dismal, that some places in the Communist country have enacted pork rationing.

US President Donald Trump has pitched the idea of hosting the next G7 Summit at his own private golf resort in Miami. The resort is said to be struggling financially due to the president's tarnished brand, but its close proximity to the airport makes it a strong contender. The idea has come under fire from critics who claim that such a move may be unconstitutional as Trump would be profiting from his position as president.

Australian officials have reported that a well-known Australian writer and democracy activist has been charged with espionage in China. In addition to having written three spy novels set in China, the man is said to have written a copious amount of blog posts pertaining to the rule of law, democracy and human rights. Although formally charged this week, the man has been detained in China since January in conditions that many describe as inhospitable.

Nearly 10-thousand people in Japan have signed a petition urging the country to lift its trade restrictions against South Korea. The petition was organized by a group consisting of scholars, legal professionals and activists calling themselves the "Group Petitioning on Whether South Korea Is a Foe." The group stressed that it's absurd for Japan to treat South Korea like an enemy and that Seoul is an important neighbor in establishing peace and prosperity in the region based on democracy.

Some 800 million people are expected to be traveling during one of China's pre-eminent holidays, National Day, AKA "Golden Week." In response, Chinese authorities will implement special support measures such as increasing the number of flights and train services available. Given the utter calamity caused by the copious amount of travelers on the move during the holiday, there have been attempts to stop Golden Week because of the disruption it causes to the country’s local and international businesses.

Malaysia's Prime Minister recently condemned the world's powerful nations for disregarding international laws and for essentially taking the law into their own hands. The remarks came at a joint press briefing with his Vietnamese counterpart as part of his three-day state visit to the country. Vietnam and Malaysia have long been embroiled in maritime disputes with China and so the two countries pledged to assist each other in matters of peace and stability.

Pakistan’s budget deficit has reportedly hit its highest level in almost three decades. The news comes ahead of the International Monetary Fund’s review of a bailout program put in place to curtail a fiscal blowout. Provisional numbers released by the Finance Ministry show a nearly 9 percent deficit, which was a far cry from the government's projected 5.6 percent. Pakistan’s IMF loan could be in jeopardy if such trends continue.

An ethnic Korean has thrown his hat into the ring in Bolivia's presidential race in October. Chung Chi-hyun, the 49-year-old pastor son of a pastor, moved to the country in 1982 at the age of 12. Chung says he was motivated to run for the top office because he opposed several of the incumbent administration's policies. Most experts agree that Chung has next to no chance of winning, however if he does, he hopes to recreate Korea's Miracle on the Han, but this time on the Rio Madeira.

North Korean media outlets have urged Japan to atone for the brutality it bestowed upon Korea during its colonial rule of the country. The remarks come on the 109th anniversary of the Korean Peninsula falling under Japanese rule. The official newspaper of North Korea's ruling party called Japan's colonial rule of Korea the most brutal extortion of a country's sovereignty ever. Other DPRK media outlets carried similar stories.

The number of hourly lecturers in South Korea decreased by 7,800 in the run-up to the implementation of the country's so-called "Instructor Act." The number includes more than 4,700 full-time university lecturers who were shown the door. Many analysts say that the new law may have backfired as concerns that universities would lay off lecturers in droves ahead of the law have become a reality. In response, the Ministry of Education has drawn up support measures for those who have lost their jobs.

Korea's Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has announced extensive plans to diversify the country's foreign tourist market. Ultimately, the Ministry hopes to boost the vitality of Korea's tourism industry. The first step of the plan is to entice more visitors from China and Southeast Asia. In addition, the government plans to leverage the power of K-pop by producing promotional content starring Yoon-ah from Girls' Generation, which will be shown online in some 21 target countries.

US President Donald Trump has once again vowed to help Apple when it comes to the issue of tariffs. Trump said recently that Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed concern over the impact US tariffs on Chinese goods could have on Apple's products. According to Cook and Trump, as Samsung's US-destined products are manufactured in Vietnam and India they could escape additional tariffs, which could put Apple, with its China-built products, on the back foot.

A social activist has recently likened the massacre of the Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar to Hitler's extermination of European Jews. In making the claim, the activist has called on Korea to side with the Rohingya, saying that what they are going through right now is nothing short of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery. The governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar are now working on plans to repatriate some of the more than one million Rohingya refugees living in squalid camps in Bangladesh.

President Trump has walked back his apparent support of stricter background checks to make gun purchases in the US. Earlier this month, the US president had indicated that in light of a groundswell of public support for such checks, that he may be open to the idea. Trump's apparent waffling comes after he met with the head of the National Rifle Association, which bills itself as "America’s longest-standing civil rights organization." The NRA was founded in 1871 with a self-stated mandate to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis."

A bank in Denmark has become the first there to impose negative interest rates on its customers' deposits.  Under the new policy, account balances over one-point-one million dollars are charged a default rate of zero-point-six percent per year. An executive said the bank was making the change because it had “a significant and increasing deposit surplus and hence incurs large expenses in relation to these.” Other banks in the country are expected to follow suit.

A union of delivery drivers in South Korea has conducted its second collective action recently calling for a specialized insurance rate for people in their line of work. The group claims current insurance premiums are unrealistic and represent the current disparity of the delivery industry. High insurance premiums for delivery drivers coupled with low salaries are said to be putting the riders between a rock and a hard place. The group has also called for a safety training system for two-wheeled vehicles.

A second-hand warship gifted to the Philippine Navy by South Korea has arrived in the Philippines. Named after the most decorated Philippine Army soldier killed during the Korean War, the Conrado Yap warship will be the country's most potent. As it made its way from Korea to the Philippines, the vessel was shadowed by a Chinese naval ship when it passed China's waters. The Philippine's has recently made public its intentions to beef up its military.

Two French tourists are in hot water for allegedly pilfering some 40 kilograms of sand from a beach in Sardinia. The case of sticky fingers could land the pair in the slammer for six years. China has been found to have eight of the 10 most surveilled cities in the world. Preventing the Middle Kingdom from making a clean sweep of the top ten were London in sixth and Atlanta in tenth. Despite the abundance of cameras, researchers found little correlation with people's relative feeling of safety. Closer to home, Seoul ranked 34th, with more than 37-thousand surveillance cameras staking out the city's approximately 10 million residents.

Singapore will gradually raise its retirement age from 62 to 65. The retirement age will rise to 63 in 2022 and to 65 by 2030. Singapore has the longest life expectancy in the world and expects its population to be working longer and living healthier lives. Also, many want to stay employed to build up a bigger nest egg for when they eventually retire. Singapore will also raise its re-employment age from 67 to 70 by 2030. Under the re-employment law, companies in Singapore are required to offer eligible employees the option of continuing to work until they are 67.

There's a surge in the number of Hongkongers who want to emigrate to Taiwan. Taiwan says it is speeding up the processing of applications from Hongkongers who want to immigrate to the self-governing democracy. In 2009, fewer than 100 people were given residency, but last year the number spiked to 1,267. This year there's been a 14 percent jump in approvals. Amidst the ongoing unrest in Hong Kong, Hongkongers are seeing Taiwan as a safe haven with less expensive rents. Former President Barack Obama's old basketball jersey from his days as a high school basketball player fetched $120,000 at an auction in Texas. An anonymous sports collector bought the shirt from Obama's younger classmate.  Peter Noble was three years behind Obama at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He said the jersey was headed for the trash bin before he decided to keep it. A portion of the proceeds from the auction will go to the school.

The swimming leg of a test event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was canceled Saturday due to poor water quality. E-coli levels in the water were found to be more than double the acceptable limit. A new K-food craze has seemingly swept Indonesia as of late with tteokbokki now said to be all the rage in the Southeast Asian nation. The delectable sweet and spicy snack can be found everywhere from local shops to large global fast food joints. As is the case with many things, localization has played an important role in this latest craze, with the rice cakes being tailored to local tastes. A young dugong that had been rescued in Thailand has died from ingesting plastic. The animal had washed up on shore in April and photos of her nuzzling with her rescuers soon went viral. An autopsy showed obstructions in the animal's stomach caused by plastic that led to inflammation and gas build-up. Dugongs, AKA sea cows, are related to manatees and graze on sea grass in warm, shallow waters from East Africa to Australia.

In an attempt to reduce deadly human traffic jams on Mount Everest, officials in Nepal have proposed new rules aimed at weeding out inexperienced climbers. Under the proposed measures, would-be Everest climbers would have to have already scaled another major peak. In addition to safety issues, Everest has also been plagued by fraudulent activity. Last year, helicopter operators and hospitals were found to have conspired to bilk millions of dollars from insurance companies.

The once flagrant activities of Somali pirates are seemingly waning due to the efforts of a multinational anti-piracy fleet. Despite this, the threat of piracy persists in the waters off West Africa, with more than 46% of the world's piracy cases and nearly 73% of ship hijackings this year taking place in the region. The world's largest e-commerce retailer, Amazon, has announced plans to donate unsold items to charity. The program will go into effect next month and will be the default option for all sellers that choose to dispose of unsold products held in Amazon warehouses. However, sellers can elect to opt out if they choose. The move comes amid reports that Amazon routinely discards unsold inventory amounting to some 3 million items last year in just France alone.

Singapore is set to ban the domestic trade of elephant ivory there from September 2021. The sale of elephant ivory and ivory products, as well as the public display of ivory products with the intent to sell them will be prohibited once the ban takes effect. The move is aimed at rooting out smuggling measures that exploit a loophole allowing the sale of ivory having entered the market prior to 1990. The display of ivory for educational or religious purposes will continue to be permitted.

Travelers holding passports from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, AKA North Korea can travel visa-free to 39 countries around the world. The regime's ranking is good for 100-and-first place out of 109, with only 10 other countries faring worse in terms of number of visa-free entries. On the other hand, South Korea is rubbing shoulders with Finland and Germany in second place. Travelers from all three of these countries can visit 187 jurisdictions around the world without a prior visa. Singapore and Japan tied for first place, with 189.

As South Korea has deployed a fresh batch of troops to the Gulf of Aden, speculation is rife that the contingent could also join a U.S.-led coalition in the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, the official mission is six months of anti-piracy patrols off the coast of Somalia. A South Korean unit has been deployed in that region since early 2009 as part of global efforts to tackle piracy there. In that time, the unit has ensured the safety of more than 22,000 vessels and countered 21 pirate attacks in the treacherous waters.

A monument for revered Korean independence fighter Choi Jae-hyung was recently unveiled at the site of his former home in Russia. The monument was designed in the shape of the Korean Peninsula and bears elements of the South Korean national flag. A bust of Choi was also unveiled during the ceremony. Born in what is now North Korea, Choi made his fortune doing military procurement projects, and used the money to support Korea's independence movement.

Korea is expected to post a power surplus this year amid cooler temperatures and increased renewable energy production. On the surface, such a surplus may sound desirable, but there are those who feel that having too much power on hand is wasteful. Aggravating the situation is the fact that power demand estimates were erroneous. Peak demand for electricity this summer stood at just shy of 86 gigawatts, more than 6.5 GW lower than last summer's peak of 92.5 GW.

A major motion picture studio in the US has canceled the release of an upcoming film after the film's storyline sparked backlash from critics, including US President Donald Trump. The president derided Hollywood and suggested that the film would inflame and cause chaos. He stopped short of mentioning the name of the film. The studio had already halted the marketing campaign for the film, before making the decision to pull it entirely in light of recent events in the US.

Two bodies recently discovered in the Himalayas are thought to be those of two Korean climbers who disappeared there a decade ago. There have been traces of the men found before, but this is the first time intact bodies have been located. Although an official identification has yet to be made, a great deal of Korea-related paraphernalia has been found at the site. The bereaved families of the two climbers will leave for Nepal on Monday to confirm the identity of the bodies.

Korea is seemingly in a bind regarding who to support in the conflict brewing in the Strait of Hormuz. The crux of the matter is whether to join the U.S.-led coalition to patrol the Strait or to decline the U.S. request in favor of Iran. Korea is party to an economic partnership with Iran, one that includes crude oil imports. Iran's foreign ministry has urged Korea "to remain neutral" in the matter, while the US has officially asked Korea to join its coalition, leading to the catch 22.

Korea's per capita GDP in terms of purchasing power parity, or PPP, is expected to surpass Japan's in the year 2023. PPP measures economic variables in different countries in such a way that exchange rate variations do not distort comparisons. According to the IMF, Korea's per capita GDP in terms of PPP was $37,542, good for 32nd out of 194 countries. Japan was one notch higher in 31st place at $39,795. The IMF expects South Korea to come from behind and have a $109 lead over Japan within the next four years.

Angelina Jolie’s son Maddox Jolie-Pitt is getting ready to leave the nest and head off to college. The 18-year-old is set to study at one of Korea's prestigious SKY universities and has already begun taking Korean lessons to help him comes to terms with the language. Maddox has reportedly declared biochemistry as his major and will have plenty of interesting classes to study once the semester starts in September. Ahead of that, his mother is said to be accompanying him in August to help him get situated and acclimatized to his new surroundings.

After the missing 14-year-old girl from Cheongju was discovered alive, public interest is keen on Dalgwan, the seven-year-old shepherd that made the discovery and that has been lauded as a national hero. However, due to regulations, military dogs are not entitled to receive promotions or medals. At the very least, people are calling for Dalgwan to receive a citation. Interestingly, this is not the first time that Dalgwan has been in the limelight. In 2014, while on his way to a training facility, Dalgwan went AWOL, but was recovered the next day.

Toni Morrison, the first black woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature died on Monday in New York. Morrison's works explored black identity in America through luminous writing that many say was unrivalled in the English language. She was that rare breed of writer who enjoyed both critical and commercial success. Her best-selling novels were also the subject of myriad critical studies. In addition to her Nobel Prize, her other laurels include the National Humanities Medal in 2000 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented in 2012 by President Barack Obama.

In March 2015, Seoul introduced a system whereby fire engines and ambulances work in tandem. The so-called "pumpbulances," a portmanteau of the Korean expression "pump car" and the English word "ambulance," step in when a regular ambulance cannot respond to an emergency call. Of the 109 heart attack patients rescued this year, 12 of them have been the beneficiary of the city's "pumpbulance" initiative.

Recent calls have come for Britain to return artifacts looted during its colonial era. A Jamaican government minister has demanded that the British Museum repatriate objects in its collection taken when the island was a British colony. Other nations, including Greece and Ethiopia, have made similar claims. The issue of repatriating ill-gotten objects is a pressing matter in the museum world. For its part, the British Museum has said it has not received any official communication from the ministry of culture in Jamaica.

An Israeli spacecraft that crashed in April while attempting to land on the moon's surface may have inadvertently introduced life there. The craft's payload contained human DNA samples, plant cells, animal cells, and thousands of so-called "water bears." Given that "water bears" are considered virtually indestructible, some experts have begun to ponder if there could theoretically now be life on the moon. The craft carrying the bears crashed on April 11 after a glitch caused its engines to malfunction.

Seven years have lapsed since NASA's Curiosity rover first touched down on Mars.  Since then, Curiosity has been tasked with finding the answer to one all-important question: Can Mars harbor life? As it turns out, the answer is a resounding, yes. Mars was found to have a mix of sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon that could allow microbes to thrive. Curiosity's original two-year mission should have ended in 2017, but has been extended indefinitely by NASA officials.

A 17-year-old Russian girl recently defied her government by reading the Russian constitution to assembled riot police while pro-democracy protests took place in Moscow. Russia's constitution states that Russians have the right to peaceful assembly. The protests were sparked by the refusal of Russia's election watchdog to endorse opposition politicians for next month's municipal elections in Moscow. During this turbulent time in Russia, the girl says she hopes to document the country's political landscape.

In response to the Aichi Triennale Art Festival shutting down its Statue of Peace exhibit, people have begun staging protests by mimicking the statue's pose.  One Italian woman posted photos of women posing as the so-called “comfort women” statue as a protest against the censorship of the exhibit. A student in Mexico also posted a photo of her tribute to the statue on her personal social media account. This is not the first time global citizens have taken to protesting atrocities committed by Japan.

A town in Sweden has recently introduced a begging permit that requires anyone asking for money in the street to purchase a licence upfront. The contentious permit costs 31,000 won and those found begging without one face fines of up to 500,000 won. Despite being introduced mere days ago, some beggars have already been attempting to circumvent matters by selling fruit. The Nigerian city of Lagos has recently been named one of the world's worst when it comes to traffic snarls. Traffic there is so gridlocked that a 50-kilometer commute can take as long as eight hours, making Seoul's traffic jams pale in comparison. A round-trip journey between Seoul and Busan could theoretically be completed in a similar amount of time. Share prices of several video game companies fell sharply recently after scathing attacks from US politicians implicating video games in the recent spate of mass shootings there. President Trump said that the glorification of violence in US society must stop while referring to "gruesome" and "grisly" video games. ASEAN foreign ministers have laid down the law when it comes to illegal shipments of hazardous chemicals and wastes. In a joint statement, the ministers called on all countries to manage such waste in an environmentally sound manner within their respective jurisdictions. The statement comes after several ASEAN countries have been deluged by containers carrying toxic waste from other countries. According to officials, when track temperatures exceed 55 degrees Celsius trains are slowed to 230 kph (or less). At track temperatures of more than 64 degrees, operations are ceased entirely.
