미국 오하이오주에 갔을 때 아미시(AMISH) 마을에 갔다.  아미시는 메노나이트교회에 속하는 보수적인 프로테스탄트교회의 교파를 말한다. 1693년 스위스와 알자스에서 야코프 아만(Jakob Ammann)이 전근대 유럽의 종교 박해를 피해 신세계로 이끌고 온 재세례파 계열 신도들의 후손들이라고 한다.  쉽게 말해 우리나라의 '청학동 마을'과 같은 형태로 사는 사람들이다.  마차를 몰고 다니고, 전기를 쓰지 않아 빨래도 집앞에 말리고...새로운 문물을 쓰지 않는 사람들.  새로운 풍경이었다. 전기줄이 없고 차고도 없다. 차가 없으니까. 마굿간이 있지... ㅎ 가족들의 의상이 새롭다. 모두 다 저렇게 입고 다닌다. 남자는 구레나룻을 기르고, 여자는 19세기식 보닛을 쓰며, 유럽의 옛 농민의 풍속을 답습해왔다. 병역기피, 아동의 취학거부 등의 문제 때문에 골치를 앓던 정부의 설득으로 이후 조금씩 효과가 나타나 근대화하기 시작하였다.  주로 미국의 펜실베이니아주(州)·오하이오주·인디애나주 등 여러 주에 집단적으로 살고 있다. 이들은 새로운 문명을 완강히 거부하고 있다.  예를 들면, 일상생활에서 18세기의 검은 모자나 검은 양복을 상용하고 마차를 사용하며, 보석·자동차 등 문명의 이기를 거부하고 예배당도 없이 신자 개인 집에서 예배를 드린다.  예전에 우리가 보던 '초원의 집' 이런 분위기다. 마을이... ^^:;;  빨래줄이 정말 길다. 대부분 미국에서는 세탁기를 쓰고 건조기까지 쓰는데, 전기를 안쓰니 이런 풍경이 나온다고... 지나가면서 찍어서 흔들렸지만 이것도 빨래 널어둔 곳. 아미시 집임을 알수 있는 증거다. 그리고 18살인가 19살인가 성인이 되는 순간 앞으로의 길을 선택할 수 있게 한다고 한다. 아미시 집단에서 계속 살지 아니면 밖으로 나가서 살지... 그런 순간이 오지만, 사실 어릴 때 부터 아미시 내에서 교육받고

Two women, born 13 months apart in South Korea, but adopted to families in the US, recently learned they are sisters. But the kicker is, the two grew up just 30 minutes apart without knowing the other existed. The elder sister said she was "floored" when she found out, while the younger sister reported "it took a long time [for the fact] to sink in." The Washington Monument was recently adorned with a life-size projection of the Saturn V rocket, which launched the Apollo 11 spaceflight toward the moon.
