When the idea was first floated, local education offices immediately warmed to the idea as it was a way to prevent schools from having to close permanently. When asked what they planned to do with their newfound language skills, these mature students' answers ranged from the simple, 'write letters to my family,' to the more aspirational, 'run for president of the village women’s society'.

Emperor Akihito of Japan will abdicate tomorrow at the age of 85, becoming the first Japanese monarch to retire in over 200 years. He is the first emperor of modern Japan to have reigned without his country ever being at war. Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko made headlines multiple times by visiting neighboring countries in order to smooth relations. For instance, in 1992, during a visit to China, he said he felt “deep sorrow” about an “unfortunate period in which my country inflicted great suffering on the people of China.” His elder son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will succeed him as emperor. In Japan, the Emperor is a figurehead without political power. But the monarchy is still an important institution there, and his abdication is likely to have a lasting impact.

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

After China's decision last year to ban plastic waste imports, Malaysia has begun cracking down on people who are trying to cash-in on new opportunities. Over the past 10 months, Malaysia has shut down 148 unlicensed plastic recycling plants, but only a fraction of those who illegally run the plants have been indicted. According to a recent Greenpeace report, during the first seven months of 2018, plastic waste exported from the US to Malaysia more than doubled compared to the previous year.

New satellite analysis shows that millions of hectares of pristine tropical rainforest were destroyed in 2018. Chief among the causes for the destruction were beef, chocolate and palm oil farming. Brazil was particularly hard hit, losing 11% of its rainforest over the period of 1985 to 2017, which represents an area roughly 10 times larger than the Korean peninsula. Environmentalists and NGOs are concerned that deforestation could worsen under the government of President Bolsonaro, who was elected on his campaign pledge to develop Amazon rainforests.

According to a recent survey of more than 480 office workers in Korea, nearly 96% of them felt that vacations were required in one's office life. Needless to say, the overall results were completely foreseeable. But something unexpected was the duration of time off that most people wanted. Respondents said they needed two vacations a year, and the average vacation time they thought was appropriate was two weeks at a go. When asked what they'd do during their time off, the most common response was "take it easy."

U.S. politicians are starkly divided over the newly released Mueller report, which neither accuses President Trump nor exonerates him of trying to obstruct justice in the Russia investigation.  Some Democrats have said the alleged actions of the Trump administration are “worse than Watergate,” referring to the scandal that ended the presidency of Richard Nixon.  Some Democrats think there are still grounds for impeachment, but others think it might just raise President Trump’s standing in the polls.  For now, Democrats are demanding the full version of the Mueller report, without any parts redacted.

Russian media have reported sightings of a polar bear in a village some 700 kilometers from his home.  Locals in the village of Tilichiki, on the Kamtchatka Peninsula, have taken pictures of the bear wandering around, and say he’s exhausted.  They’ve been feeding him fish.  Apparently, climate change caused the bear to move south, which he did by hitching a ride on an ice floe.  But he’s not the first to do so  –  in February, another village was visited by dozens of polar bears looking for food.  The local authorities are planning to sedate this bear and airlift him back home.

The authorities in Paris are one step closer to finding what caused the fire last week that ravaged Notre Dame Cathedral.  A source from the police has told CNN that investigators think the fire started at the center of the cathedral’s roof, near its iconic spire.  They came to that conclusion based on amateur video and photos from local residences.  The source said they’re also looking at the elevators used by the workers, but no further details were given on that.  Apparently, security guards only noticed the flames when they were already 3 meters high, meaning the fire alarm might not have been working properly.

The common people who gave a fake gift to BTS Controversy in the American Community! With the release of its new mini-album "MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA," a heartbreaking issue has arisen for BTS-loving fans who are expanding their global activities. This is because of "gifts" given to BTS as a guest on "Sirius XM," a U.S. radio show that featured BTS, on Wednesday (local time). Fans and the Korean community in the U.S. have come under fire for being ranked No. 1 on the list of postings and comments. BTS members were surprised and delighted, and thanked their seniors for the gift. #Coffee #shops are prompting some people to think about the #pros and #cons of #redenominating the #Korean #currency.

Coffee shops are prompting some people to think about the pros and cons of redenominating the Korean currency.  Many cafes are chopping zeroes off their prices.  For a drink that costs 3,500 won, the menu shows a price of 3.5.  There are fewer digits there, which some say helps make the menu easier to read and makes bookkeeping simpler.  On the other hand, some point out that fewer zeros could trick our brains into thinking things are cheaper than they are, and cause prices to rise.  A house that costs 680,000 won might be considered a bargain, which would encourage the seller to raise it to 700,000.

The president of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, has called on the UK to return a set of classical sculptures from what he called the “murky prison” of the British Museum.  Called the “Parthenon Marbles,” they were taken from the Parthenon by the British peer Lord Elgin in the early 19th century.  The Greek president said that for the British, the statues are trophies.  Greece has been calling for decades for them to be sent back, but the British Museum has always ruled it out.  The museum says Lord Elgin had permission at the time to take them.

Government officials in India are crossing mountains, rivers and deserts to make sure that all 900 million eligible voters can take part in the world’s biggest election, set to last until May 19th.  The rule now in India is that no one should have to travel more than two kilometers to take part, so election officials risk life and limb.  In one case, a priest living with lions in the forest has a polling booth just for himself, and in another, poll workers need a week’s time to pass through canyons and jungle just to reach a village with fewer than 250 voters.  In all, there will be one million polling booths set up for this humongous example of democracy in action.

Netizens in Japan are criticizing their government’s failed push at the WTO to get Korea to import fish and seafood from waters near Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster.  In a typical comment, one user recognized Korea’s right to ensure its people’s safety, asking, “does Japan import fish without knowing they’re safe?  It doesn’t, but it’s trying to force someone else to.”  High-ranking officials have weighed in too, but seem unwilling to accept the WTO’s ruling.  The minister of fisheries, Yoshikawa Takamori, said the day the ruling came out that he doesn’t think it means Japanese marine products are unsafe.  Foreign Minister Taro Kono, too, said the Japanese government has not changed its position.

Using more than 2,600 sets of patient data in his AI model, he was able to predict the outcomes of treatments 90 percent of the time, up from 70 percent before.  The paper by Captain Heo JoonNyung and his colleagues will appear in the May edition of the international medical journal “Stroke.”
