He was the first Malaysian to be launched into space, but today, Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, a trained orthopaedic surgeon, is delivering food using a scooter amid the country's partial lockdown. One Twitter user said "He's been my idol since I was a kid. Now he's also a delivery man. Nice one, boss. He's truly a humble person." Dr. Muszaphar became the first Malaysian to reach space when he was launched to the International Space Station in October 2007.

Russian paratroopers have performed the world’s first ever jumps from an altitude of 10,000 meters in the Arctic wearing special polar outfits to test new equipment developed for extreme Arctic conditions. The combat outfit included over 40 items, including a raid suit, a special sleeping bag for low temperatures, transport containers for ensuring the safety of medical supplies, communications systems, food rations and many other elements. The paratroopers used a special next-generation parachute system, tested oxygen equipment, navigation devices, special gear and outfits.

Hong Kong’s main gateway has become the first airport in the world to make use of a full-body disinfection channel facility. The disinfection channel is an enclosed facility similar to a telephone booth in size where users can complete disinfection and sanitizing procedures in 40 seconds. The interior surface of the channel is equipped with an antimicrobial coating which can remotely kill viruses and bacteria on human bodies and clothing. Sanitizing spray is also applied for instant disinfection.

A music video that was meant to spotlight China's efforts to help the Philippines check the spread of the coronavirus drew irate responses, as it instead came across to many Filipinos as a veiled attempt by Beijing to reassert its claims over the South China Sea. It was supposed to be a feel-good song, with lyrics written by Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian that praised cooperation between Manila and Beijing. The song's title - (One Sea) - touched a sensitive nerve, though, as it appeared to suggest legitimising China's claims over waters the Philippines considers part of its territories.  A day after it was uploaded, the video had already gotten over 100,000 dislikes.

The rules for displaying the Singaporean national flag have been amended so that people can fly it until September. The move is in response to public requests to display the flag during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak as a rallying symbol. President Halimah Yaacob said, “The days ahead will remain challenging for a while, as we continue to fight the Covid-19 virus. However, I am confident with our collective courage and tenacity, we will be able to pull through this together.”

The bodies of two South Korean trekkers have been discovered after they went missing in January when an avalanche hit the Annapurna region in Nepal. Their identities have been confirmed with passports found along with the bodies, but details other than their genders remain withheld at the request of their families, officials said. Rescue and search efforts were suspended about a week after the accident due to harsh weather conditions and subsequent avalanches in the region, but they resumed in early April as the temperature got warmer, with the snow and ice beginning to melt.

Milan is to introduce one of Europe’s most ambitious schemes reallocating street space from cars to cycling and walking, in response to the coronavirus crisis. Under the nationwide lockdown, motor traffic congestion has dropped by 30-75%, and air pollution with it. City officials hope to fend off a resurgence in car use as residents return to work looking to avoid busy public transport. The city has announced that 35km of streets will be transformed over the summer, with a rapid, experimental citywide expansion of cycling and walking space to protect residents as Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.

NASA and SpaceX are targeting May 27, 2020 for an historic mission: the launch of the first astronauts on the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, with the destination as the International Space Station. The crew, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley, are scheduled to launch on a Falcon 9 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center. If all goes well, the Crew Dragon will autonomously dock with the space station about 24 hours later. This scheduled flight will be the first crewed mission launched from the U.S. since the final space shuttle flight on July 8, 2011.

Global carbon dioxide emissions will likely drop 6% this year, the World Meteorological Organisation chief says, but warned the coronavirus-linked fall will not be significant enough to curb global warming. WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said, "COVID-19 may result in a temporary reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, but it is not a substitute for sustained climate action". The report was released on World Earth Day, when Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg's Fridays for Future team also launched a new campaign.

The biggest bell in Notre Dame has rang out across a Paris under coronavirus lockdown to mark the anniversary of the fire that devastated the cathedral last year. The cathedral, now roofless and windowless, has stood silent and fenced-off by the bank of the Seine river since mid-March, when the lockdown forced restoration works to end. Only on Good Friday was Archbishop Michel Aupetit allowed to enter, with just six companions, for a brief ceremony broadcast by video to the faithful.

China’s securities regulator said on Friday it would investigate claims of fraud at Luckin Coffee Inc. Shares of Luckin, which competes in China with Starbucks, sank as much as 81% on Thursday after it announced an internal investigation had shown its chief operating officer fabricated sales deals. The company said it had suspended COO Jian Liu and employees reporting to him following initial recommendations from a special committee.

Bill Gates made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he spoke about the global impact of the novel coronavirus and his 2015 Ted Talk prediction that a health crisis would one day destabilize the United States. In 2015, the Microsoft co-founder, billionaire and philanthropist told an audience: "If anything kills over 10 million people in the next few decades, it’s most likely to be a highly infectious virus rather than a war. Not missiles, but microbes." To help contain the illness, Gates and his wife, Melinda, in February donated $100 million to aid vaccine research and treatment efforts on behalf of their foundation.

Nepal's top court has ordered the government to bring back migrant workers stranded abroad in the coronavirus crisis after the country barred its own citizens from returning. Up to 2.6 million Nepali migrants are estimated to be in the Gulf, Malaysia and Korea and labour rights activists say many have lost their jobs due to coronavirus lockdowns in those countries, leaving them highly vulnerable. The government has banned them from returning home for fear they could spread the virus, but the Supreme Court said the government could not sit by while its own citizens struggled.

Lady Gaga kicked off Saturday night's "One World: Together At Home" livestream concert, which featured more than 70 celebrities and singers, by praising medical workers that are putting their lives on the line. The special also included performances by Billie Eilish, Elton John, Lizzo, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney — all recorded in their homes around the world. Gaga also brought the show to a close by joining John Legend, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli, and pianist Lang Lang to perform "The Prayer," the 1999 hit by Dion and Bocelli.

Coronavirus-related discrimination in New York City is on the rise, particularly against Asian-Americans, prompting the city to establish a new response team to handle the complaints. The city’s Commission on Human Rights said since Feb. 1 it has received 248 complaints of discrimination spurred by fears over Covid-19. The lion’s share of complaints were made in March and April, and about 42% have been specifically anti-Asian. Sapna Raj, deputy commissioner of the commission’s law enforcement bureau said, “We realized we needed to respond rapidly to unique issues that New Yorkers were facing.”

More than 11 million people tuned in to watch the 25th anniversary staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera last weekend. The show was the composer’s latest to be made available to watch for free in YouTube series The Shows Must Go On, after Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Jesus Christ Superstar each racked up more than two million views. The musical’s sequel Love Never Dies will be the next show to be screened.  It picks up 10 years after the events of Phantom and will run from 7pm on Friday April 24 for 48 hours.

Pressure has been mounting on the Swedish government to explain how, despite a stated aim of protecting the elderly from the risks of Covid-19, a third of fatalities have been people living in care homes. Last week, figures indicated that 1,333 people had now died of coronavirus, and the country’s normally unflappable state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell admitted that the situation in care homes was worrying. Tegnell is the brains behind the government’s relatively light-touch strategy, which has seen it ask, rather than order, people to avoid non-essential travel, work from home and stay indoors if they are over 70 or are feeling ill.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is scrapping its 2020 national finals because of concerns about the coronavirus and uncertainty about when public gatherings will be permitted. Executive director Paige Kimble said in a statement, “Our hearts go out to the spellers who won’t get their final shot at winning. They are now part of a group who are missing out on opportunities due to the coronavirus." The bee - started in 1925 - has only been canceled one time since World War II.

In a recent interview speaking about Michelle Obama as a potential running mate, Joe Biden made some noise. "I'd take her in a heartbeat," Biden said, "She's brilliant. She knows her way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends." Biden has pledged that he will pick a woman as his VP, but would Ms. Obama be interested?  All signs point to “no”.  In her memoir “Becoming”, which sold 10 million copies she said, "I'll say it here directly: I have no intention of running for office, ever."

The spread of COVID-19 in France is changing the way the country’s citizens are greeting each other, as the French Health and Social Solidarity Minister recently recommended to refrain from cheek kissing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Apparently, the change in custom is a welcome change.  In a recent poll, 72 percent of respondents said they will refrain from cheek kisses with colleagues when they return to their offices The cheek kiss is a widely practiced greeting in Europe, including France and Italy, between family members, friends and close coworkers.

A 99-year-old war veteran has raised more than £9m for the NHS by aiming to walk 100 lengths of his back garden before his 100th birthday. Capt. Tom Moore initially planned on raising £1,000 through the challenge, but after launching his campaign on 8 April and raising £70,000 in 24 hours, he prolonged his fundraiser and had passed £4m by midnight. On Wednesday morning his Twitter account said: “6 MILLION POUNDS!! Thank you everyone, this is all for our incredible NHSCharities.”

Some countries in Latin America are releasing prisoners over fears of COVID-19 outbreaks inside the facilities. Colombia, for instance, will temporarily release some 4,000 prisoners to house arrest in an attempt to stem the spread of the coronavirus. The measure is directed at prisoners who are pregnant, disabled or over age 60, women prisoners with children under age three, and those with cancer, diabetes or cardiac problems - conditions considered dangerous should they contract the virus. Prisoners who have sentences of up to five years and who have completed 40% of their sentences are also eligible for the house arrest program, according to a government decree.

Students preparing to apply for American colleges next year could face a radically different testing environment than their peers in the past due to the coronavirus outbreak. The College Board announced Wednesday on its website that officials are developing a take-home version of the annual SAT exam for use in the event that schools do not reopen for on-site classes in the fall. Wednesday's announcement comes as the College Board was forced to cancel the upcoming June SAT test dates, the latest string of testing cancellations this year.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama endorsed Joe Biden, his two-term vice president, in the race for the White House. “Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend. And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now,” Obama said in a video posted to Twitter. Biden said in a tweet that Obama’s endorsement “means the world to me. We’re going to build on the progress we made together, and there’s no one I’d rather have standing by my side.”

The coronavirus pandemic may limit supplies of bananas in Asia, as growers in the Philippines, the world’s second-biggest exporter, said overseas shipments may drop by nearly 40% this year as lockdowns curb output and transport. “Bananas have to be harvested every day,” said Alberto Bacani, president of Unifrutti Philippines. “By the time we come back, a lot of that fruit will be spoiled and will have to be thrown away.” The Philippines accounted for an estimated 20% of global banana shipments in 2019 and about 90% of total export volumes in Asia.

Guyana is expected to see an overall economic growth of  51.7 percent for this year, with further projections over the next two years. The World Bank said oil production is projected to boost the country’s GDP growth to an unprecedented level this year, but also warned that while this could transform Guyana, there are risks compounded by falling oil prices and the COVID-19 pendemic. President David Granger did say, however, his government is better equipped to provide proper Personal Protective Equipment for the medical staff carrying out testing and treatment along with much needed materials and equipment.

Demand for tulips has severely dropped as flower shops around the globe have shut down because of the outbreak, consumers have gone into lockdown and celebrations have been canceled. Usually, the period from March through May — including the weeks in which International Women’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day fall — is the Dutch flower industry’s time to rake it in. It pulls in $7.6 billion, with an average of $30 million in flowers sold daily. Fred van Tol, manager of international sales for the largest cooperation of flower producers in the Netherlands, estimates that about 400 million flowers, including 140 million tulip stems, were destroyed over the past month.

Julian Assange’s partner has revealed that he secretly fathered two children while living inside the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Stella Morris, a South African-born lawyer, says she has been in a relationship with the Wikileaks founder since 2015 and has been raising their two young sons on her own.  She says she is revealing their union for the first time because his "life is on the brink" and she did not believe he would "survive infection with coronavirus". She spoke out amid fears over the spread of Covid-19 in Belmarsh Prison. The 48-year-old Australian, who has been held there since being dragged from the Ecuadorean embassy a year ago, is now seeking bail amid concerns over his health.

Researchers who mapped some of the original spread of coronavirus in humans have discovered there are variants of the virus throughout the world. The team used data from samples taken from across the world between December 24, 2019 and March 4, 2020. They found three distinct, but closely related, variants of Covid-19, which they called A, B and C. Variant A, most closely related to the virus found in both bats and pangolins, is described as the root of the outbreak by researchers. Type B is derived from A, separated by two mutations, then C is in turn a ‘daughter’ of B, the study suggests.

The coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can produce more than three times the amount of pathogens than the strain that caused the Sars outbreak in 2003 a study has found. The finding from the research, led by prominent Hong Kong microbiologist Yuen Kwok Yung, is based on tests conducted on lung tissue removed from COVID-19 patients. 대한민국에 입국하는 해외입국자가 국내에 들어오기 위해서는 공항부터 자가격리까지 질병관리본부가 권고하는 수칙을 시켜야 한다. 국내 해외입국자 '코로나19' 확진자가 증가하면서 질병관리본부는 대한민국 입국자 관리를 위해 '격리 주의사항 안내'를 국문과 영문 모두 공지 했다. 무엇보다 국내 입국한 사람은 '검역법', '감염병의 예방 및 관리에 관한 법률'에 따라 코로나19 감염 예방을 위해 입국일 다음날로부터 14일 동안 격리생활을 해야 한다. 예를들면, 4월 1일 입국했다면, 4월 15일 23시 59분까지 자가격리를 해야한다. 입국시 공항에서부터 준수사항도 공지했다. 공항 도착 후에는 반드시 마스크를 착용하고, 다른 사람과 접촉 및 대화를 최소화 해야하며, 검역 절차에서 유증상자로 분류되면 유증상자용 개방형 선별진료소에서 검체채취를 실시해야 한다. 또한 무증상자의 경우 자택으로 이동하고, 입국 후 3일 이내(유럽발 입국자) 또는 증상 발현 시(기타 국가발 입국자) 진단검사를 실시해야 한다. 무엇보다 공항에서 자택 이동시, 자차 또는 별도 지정된 공항버스, KTX(전용칸)을 이용해야 한다. 또한 행정안전부가 마련한 '자가격리자 안전보호 앱'을 의무적으로 설치하고, 14일 동안 자가진단 및 자가격리자 생활수칙을 준수해야 한다. 추가로 격리자 생활 수칙은 격리장소 바깥으로 외출 금지, 독립된 공간에서 생활하고, 공용으로 사용하는 공간은 자주 환기하며, 진료 등 외출이 불가피한 경우 반드시 관할 보건소에 먼저 연락해야 한다. 특히, 격리 대상자의 가족 또는 동거인은 격리대상자와 접촉하지 않아야 하며, 마스크를 쓰고 2미터 이상 거리를 두며, 자가격리대상자의 건강상태를 주의 깊게 관찰하고, 손길이 많이 닿는 곳은 표면을 자주 닦아주라고 권고했다. 질병관리본부는 위의 사항을 제대로 준수하지 않을 경우 관련 법령에 따라 1년 이하의 징역 또는 1천만원 이하의 벌
