A floating contraption designed to trap plastic waste swirling in the Pacific Ocean has been redeployed after undergoing a four-month stint on the sidelines for repair. Fitted with solar-powered lights, cameras, and satellite antennas, the device can communicate its position at all times, allowing support vessels to gather the collected plastic when necessary. Japan has passed a law that bans parents and other guardians from using corporal punishment to discipline children. However, the new law is not airtight as it stops short of stipulating penalties for abuse. Indonesia's Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has announced plans to deliberately sink some 30 foreign ships caught fishing illegally. Since 2014, Indonesia has implemented a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal fishing in its territorial waters. During that time, government data have shown that 10,000 ships were deterred from illegally entering Indonesian waters, while some 500 were scuttled. The U.N. has warned that deaths on the Mediterranean Sea will increase without rescue boats as more people flee from North Africa. Rescue efforts in the area have already been curtailed due to anti-immigration policies. Data from the U.N. show that around 350 people have met a watery grave on the journey to the EU so far this year. The famed Sagrada Familia Basilica in Barcelona, Spain has been granted a building permit at long last. Despite being under construction for nearly 140 years, and receiving some four million visitors annually, the building had lacked the proper documentation. That issue has now been rectified, with Barcelona City Hall issuing a permit valid until 2026, which officials say is sufficient time to wrap up construction. Leaders of several nations, including French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Theresa May gathered this week to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. Along with the summit, a letter sent by Dwight Eisenhower to his wife, a day before the launch of the game-changing operation, has been made public.  His letter said that he would go "on a series of trips" that would take several days, apparently mindful of the landing operation at the time.  He also mentioned feeling "stymied" about choosing a topic for the letter. It's thought that the letter was deliberately ambiguous to avoid possible detection by enemy forces.
