Authorities allege that 35-year-old Pia Klemp, who hails from Germany, collected migrants at designated rendezvous points and then staged rescues at sea.
She and her crew have been under investigation since their ship was impounded two years ago.
If convicted, Klemp could face up to 20 years in prison, however some 80,000 people have signed a petition urging Italy to drop the charges.
