The Scripps National Spelling Bee is scrapping its 2020 national finals because of concerns about the coronavirus and uncertainty about when public gatherings will be permitted.

Executive director Paige Kimble said in a statement, “Our hearts go out to the spellers who won’t get their final shot at winning. They are now part of a group who are missing out on opportunities due to the coronavirus."
The bee - started in 1925 - has only been canceled one time since World War II.
