Despite skepticism that mobile 5G could cannibalize fixed broadband services, a recent study has suggested otherwise. The study found that mobile-only uptake will be strongest in emerging markets where affordable 3, 4, and 5G mobile networks pose an attractive alternative to slower fixed broadband networks. Looking at the big picture, global internet penetration, both fixed and mobile, is expected to surpass 80 percent by 2024, marking a 22 percent increase over the 60 percent penetration in 2017.
