The girl was said to have called emergency services three times to say she had been assaulted by a man who had picked her up while she was hitchhiking. Despite this, police were unable to enter the premises of the suspect for 19 hours after the girl's third and final phone call. Romania's president has criticized the police and warned of "harsh punishment" for those at fault.
