A municipal government in Japan has recently put the brakes on tourism to its controversial UNESCO World Heritage site, "Battleship Island" due to unsafe levels of asbestos. Peak levels of the cancer-causing agent were found to exceed the allowable safe level of asbestos by some 60 percent. The discovery led officials to nix tourism to the island pending further investigation. Four years after the island's inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage list, Japan's promises to honor the Korean victims who suffered there remain unfulfilled.
