A young dugong that had been rescued in Thailand has died from ingesting plastic. The animal had washed up on shore in April and photos of her nuzzling with her rescuers soon went viral. An autopsy showed obstructions in the animal's stomach caused by plastic that led to inflammation and gas build-up.
Dugongs, AKA sea cows, are related to manatees and graze on sea grass in warm, shallow waters from East Africa to Australia.
