There's a surge in the number of Hongkongers who want to emigrate to Taiwan.
Taiwan says it is speeding up the processing of applications from Hongkongers who want to immigrate to the self-governing democracy. In 2009, fewer than 100 people were given residency, but last year the number spiked to 1,267.
This year there's been a 14 percent jump in approvals. Amidst the ongoing unrest in Hong Kong, Hongkongers are seeing Taiwan as a safe haven with less expensive rents. However, Hong Kong citizens still need to come up with about $190,000 to apply for residency through a Taiwanese government investment scheme.

올해는 승인이 14퍼센트나 증가했다. 홍콩에서 계속되는 불안 속에서 홍콩인들은 대만을 비싼 임대료를 덜 받는 안전한 피난처로 보고 있다. 하지만 홍콩 시민들은 대만 정부의 투자계획을 통해 영주권을 신청하려면 아직도 약 19만 달러를 마련해야 한다.
