In a joint statement, the ministers called on all countries to manage such waste in an environmentally sound manner within their respective jurisdictions.
The statement comes after several ASEAN countries have been deluged by containers carrying toxic waste from other countries. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising ten countries in Southeast Asia, which promotes intergovernmental cooperation.

각료들은 공동 성명에서 모든 나라들에게 이러한 폐기물을 각자의 관할구역 내에서 환경적으로 건전하게 관리해 줄 것을 요청했다. 이 성명은 아세안 국가들이 다른 나라들로부터 유독성 폐기물을 운반하는 컨테이너에 의해 밀반입된 후에 나온 것이다. 동남아시아국가연합(Asociation of Asouth Asia Nations)은 동남아시아의 10개 국가로 구성된 지역 정부간 기구로서 정부간 협력을 촉진한다.
