The US government recently released data on the most popular baby names of 2018. Perched atop the list of popular girls' names is Emma.  The name has held the top spot for the past five years. For newborn baby boys, the most popular name last year was the same as it's been for the past three years: Liam. A more granular look at the data reveals something interesting.  The name Elsa, which peaked at 286th in 2014, when the film Frozen was released, tumbled to 888th in 2018.

Nearly every country in the world has recently agreed on a pact that would reduce plastic waste, with the United States being one of the few holdouts.  A United Nations official said the “historic” agreement means countries will have to monitor and track movements of plastic waste outside their borders.  The deal affects products used in a broad array of industries, such as health care, technology, food and beverage, and even fashion.  Countries will have to determine their own ways of adhering to the accord.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos recently unveiled a mockup of a lunar lander and touted plans to establish a lunar outpost in just five years.  The so-called, "Blue Moon" lander will be able to deliver payloads to the lunar surface, deploy up to four smaller rovers, and launch satellites to orbit the moon. The billionaire entrepeneur also unveiled a model of one of the proposed rovers, roughly the size of a golf cart, and presented a new rocket engine that generates more than 4,500 kg of thrust.

A 2017 pilot program to grow subtropical fruit in Pohang, South Korea has borne fruit, literally. The advent of locally grown bananas in the region means possible reductions in logistics costs to reach consumers. Banana farmers in Pohang claim that conditions there will contribute to higher yields. Authorities in the region hope the crops will revitalize the regional economy as farmers can, under the right conditions, generate income far in excess of what they could from planting rice.
