It comes after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to permanently pull U.S. funding from the global health body, but when asked whether the foundation had been set up as a response to the threat, WHO director general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus insisted it had been in the making for two years.
He said, “Since February 2018 we have been hard at work supporting the establishment of the WHO Foundation and today it gives us enormous pleasure to launch it officially.”
