Sogavare has apparently stressed the island’s need for help in infrastructure development, and ahead of its decision, China had dedicated $8.5 million in development funds.
A senior U.S. official on Tuesday reported that U.S Vice President Mike Pence, who was slated to meet with the leader of the Solomon islands, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, has now cancelled those plans following the Pacific island’s decision to discontinue its relationship with Taiwan in favor of China.
Sogavare has apparently stressed the island’s need for help in infrastructure development, and ahead of its decision, China had dedicated $8.5 million in development funds.
With the Solomon Island’s decision, only 16 countries now have formal ties with Taiwan, many of which are smaller, less-developed countries in Central America and the Pacific.
