Kenya’s Peter Tabichi was awarded the $1 million Global Teacher Prize in Dubai last week. Tabichi beat out 10,000 other candidates from over 170 countries. Mr. Tabichi teaches science and math in one of the poorest schools in rural Kenya, and he gives away the majority of his income to help the community. Life is very difficult for students in this area where drought and famine are common. 95% of the students are living in poverty and many go without food at home. The school has only one computer with a shoddy internet connection and students must walk 7km to reach it. Despite these challenges Mr. Tabichi has done remarkable work. Enrollment has doubled over the last three years and the number of students entering university has increased over 60%. His students participated in the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair last year and another group is preparing to attend an International Science and Engineering Fair in the U.S. this year.
